The Paul Whelan Trophy

Paul Whelan was a character full of life and joviality liked by all, who sadly passed away in May 1999, two weeks after the Society returned from its first tour in Ireland.

The Society decided to organise a day in his honour which has been played in September of each year since.  The roll of honour can be seen in the link below.

The majority of the annual events has been played at Kings Hill Golf Club in West Malling, now the home course of at least four HOGS members. However, we have also played at The Oxfordshire, West Malling G.C. & The London Club.

Paul's wife Emma, and two sons Alex and Thomas continue to live in West Malling and Emma joins the guys for the curry every year to present the Paul Whelan trophy to the winner. In recent years Tom has also played in the day & is a steadily improving golfer.  He has also encouraged his friends & relatives to join him. We hope that one day Emma will be able to present Tom with the trophy.

2024 - Paul Whelan Trophy

Following a fantastic day for the PWT in 2023 on the Heritage Course at The London Golf Club, we decided to revisit the International Course this year for the 26th playing of The Paul Whelan Trophy. We were very honoured & pleased to welcome Tom as Captain this year but especially pleased to be joined by his brother Alex, who was making his debut in the event,  Emma made up the family by joining us in the evening to present the trophy.

The day was once again very well organised by Steve Wellbelove at his home course. but he was unable to attend in person on the day. Unfortunately we had a number of apologies this year but we were pleased to welcome back Nick Clarke after a number of years absence.. The course was presented in excellent condition, with some tight & challenging flag positions. It was a generally overcast day but with light winds.

Emma was absolutely delighted to present the trophy to this years winner Alan Glithero, "Big Al" who scored a magnificent 45 points, shooting 4 under par gross. Gibbo was runner up a distant second with 37 points & Tom Whelan was third on 36 pts.

Emma joined us in the bar at The London Club post round for drinks and the usual curry. This took place at The Radjani in West Kingsdown, where we were joined by our esteemed senior pro John Moss, who was unfortunately still on the injured list & unable to play in the day.
