The Paul Whelan Trophy

Paul Whelan was a character full of life and joviality liked by all, who sadly passed away in May 1999, two weeks after the Society returned from its first tour in Ireland.

The Society decided to organise a day in his honour which has been played in September of each year since.  The roll of honour can be seen in the link below.

The majority of the annual events has been played at Kings Hill Golf Club in West Malling, now the home course of at least four HOGS members. However, we have also played at The Oxfordshire, West Malling G.C. & The London Club.

Paul's wife Emma, and two sons Alex and Thomas continue to live in West Malling and Emma joins the guys for the curry every year to present the Paul Whelan trophy to the winner. In recent years Tom has also played in the day & is a steadily improving golfer.  He has also encouraged his friends & relatives to join him. We hope that one day Emma will be able to present Tom with the trophy.

2025 - Paul Whelan Trophy

Following a fantastic day on the international course in 2024, we once again had the pleasure of playing on the Heritage Course at The London Golf Club, for the 27th playing of The Paul Whelan Trophy. We were very honoured & pleased to welcome both Tom & Alex this year.  Emma made up the whole family by joining us in the evening to present the trophy as usual.

The day was once again very well organised by Steve Wellbelove at his home course & 19 members took part in the day. The course was presented in excellent condition, with some tight & challenging flag positions. The weather was first class, with warm sunny skies & light winds.

Emma was absolutely delighted to present the trophy yet again to this years winner Alan Glithero, "Big Al" who scored a fantastic 40 points (1 over Gross), off 5 handicap. Reece Clements was runner up with 37 points & Mark Maidment, a new member was third with 35 pts.

Emma joined us in the bar at The London Club post round for drinks and the usual curry. This took place at the excellent Radjani in West Kingsdown, where we were joined by our esteemed senior pro John Moss, who was fit & well but unable to play in the day.
