Welcome to the website of the Holeing Out Golf Society (HOGS). The Society’s name was chosen by John Moss as the expression ‘holeing out’ can be used to describe significant events in both golf and cricket.

The history of HOGS is firmly embedded in the cricket club of the former Woolwich Equitable Building Society. The cricket club was formed in 1928 and went through several incarnations including regular league cricket, but latterly only playing matches in the Building Societies’ Knock-out competition and on an annual tour to Guernsey. As the playing membership aged, a mini golf tour would take place at the conclusion of the cricket tour & so the HOGS were born.

Following the purchase of Woolwich Building Society by Barclays Bank, Woolwich cricket club was unfortunately wound up. There already existed a healthy nucleus of golfers from the cricket club meeting on a regular basis and playing regular golf days in the UK and the near continent.

After an initial trip to Hadelot in 1998, a full-blown golf tour took place in Ireland in 1999 and the players agreed to hold an annual Spring tour and golf days in the Summer. Tours have since taken place in Spain, America, Portugal and Turkey. Other UK events have taken place in Wiltshire, Cambridgeshire, Monmouthshire and many other locations.

Sadly, following the Irish Tour a founder member died suddenly in 1999. A memorial golf day is played in his honour in September each year with the winner being awarded the Paul Whelan Trophy by Paul's widow Emma.

The Society has fostered many happy friendships over the years and all events are well supported & eagerly anticipated.
