PAUL WHELAN TROPHY

The Paul Whelan Trophy

Paul Whelan was a character full of life and joviality liked by all, who sadly passed away in May 1999, two weeks after the Society returned from its first tour in Ireland.

The Society decided to organise a day in his honour which has been played in September of each year since.  The roll of honour can be seen in the link below.

The majority of the annual events has been played at Kings Hill Golf Club in West Malling, now the home course of at least four HOGS members. However, we have also played at The Oxfordshire, West Malling G.C. & The London Club.

Paul's wife Emma, and two sons Alex and Thomas continue to live in West Malling and Emma joins the guys for the curry every year to present the Paul Whelan trophy to the winner. In recent years Tom has also played in the day & is a steadily improving golfer.  He has also encouraged his friends & relatives to join him. We hope that one day Emma will be able to present Tom with the trophy.

2023 Paul Whelan Trophy

Following a fantastic day for the PWT in 2022 on the International Course at The London Golf Club, we decided to revisit the venue & play the Jack Nicklaus designed Heritage Course in 2023 for the 25th playing of The Paul Whelan Trophy. We were very honoured & pleased to welcome Tom to play in the day & Emma to present the trophy. The day was once again very well organised by Steve Wellbelove at his home course. We appreciated a strong turnout again this year, with 18 members playing & enjoying the day. The course was presented in excellent condition, with some tight & challenging flag positions. We were fortunate to benefit from one of the hottest day's of the year at 32 degs, with a clear blue sky & light winds.

Emma joined us in the bar at The London Club post round for drinks and the usual curry. This took place at The Radjani in West Kingsdown, where we were joined by our esteemed senior pro John Moss, who was unfortunately still on the injured list & unable to play in the day.

Emma was absolutely delighted to present the trophy to this years winner Ben Cox, who she & Tom had known since they were 2 years old. Ben made a fantastic birdie 3 on the last hole to score 39 pts & to pip Tour Pro Matt Leach (who shot 2 under par gross) by 1 point. Big Al also scored 38 pts & was beaten into 3rd place by Matt on countback.
